Baltimore, MD (May 19, 2005) – The Preakness Stakes will be run this weekend at Pimlico and Sportsbook.com is offering odds on the 14-field race. Afleet Alex, the third place finisher at the Kentucky Derby is leading the pack with odds at 5-2.
Despite a surprising win at the Kentucky Derby, Giacomo is currently sitting well behind at 7-1. The Kentucky Derby winner has traditionally been an overwhelming favorite to win the Preakness but because of the slow pace on the back half mile, Giacomo may not be able to compete with the faster field at this shorter distance.
Some of the other legitimate contenders are Closing Argument (6-1,) Greely’s Galaxy (7-1) and Wilko (7-1.)
‘At this point, the field is completely unpredictable,’ says Alex Czajkowski, Marketing Director, Sportsbook.com. ‘Giacomo was a complete surprise in the Derby and the handicappers are predicting he can’t do it again at the Preakness. Afleet Alex seems to have the best shot at this point based on his consistency throughout the season.’
